SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — After going dark in March of 2023, the Bay Bridge lights are set to once again illuminate the Bay Area skyline. Workers have begun installing 50,000 new custom-engineered LED lights on the bridge’s western span, according to Illuminate, the arts nonprofit responsible for the installation.
Testing of the new lights for the installation, which is officially known as The Bay Lights, is expected to begin in early 2025, Illuminate said. While an exact timeframe for the lights’ return has not yet been given, Illuminate said it is expected in the next couple months.
“We anticipate celebrating the return of The Bay Lights to our skyline later this winter,” said Illuminate on Instagram. “Please stay tuned for the date announcement.”
The lights were switched off in early 2023 after 10 years of illuminating the north side of the Bay Bridge’s western span. The lights were shut off because at the time, the LED system illuminating the bridge’s western span was failing faster than it could be repaired.
The new installation, which will illuminate both sides of the bridge, is expected to be more durable and less susceptible to the harsh environmental conditions of the San Francisco Bay. Following the lights being switched off, they briefly flickered to life again due to a glitch.
In the ensuing months, a crowdfunding campaign was launched to bring back the lights. Illuminate said it will celebrate the lights’ return with a waterfront event.
“We hope you will join us on the waterfront!” the nonprofit said.
