March Madness may cost billions in productivity loss

The NCAA men’s and women’s basketball tournament starts this week, meaning fans will be tuning in to watch all the March Madness.

But, it’s coming at a cost.

A recent study from Action Network predicts the U.S. economy will lose approximately $20 billion in productivity during March Madness.

In a survey of 3,000 college basketball fans, it found that 40% of them have called in sick to watch the games. About 23% of fans averaged at least four hours a day watching them.

Additionally, nearly two-and-a-half hours per day are spent on checking brackets and other scores.

The First Four of the men’s tournament starts March 18-19 with the women’s starting March 19-20.
