49ers donate $20K in equipment to 3 Santa Clara high schools

(KRON) — Students and athletes at three Santa Clara high schools will be stepping up their game after the San Francisco 49ers recently donated more than $20,000 worth of workout and football training equipment.

The three high schools, Kathleen McDonald, Wilcox and Santa Clara High, received equipment such as lineman chutes, two-man sleds, step over bags and more.

“I’ve been needing a lineman chute,” explained Burt Cordera, head football coach at Kathleen McDonald High School. However, he said that they can cost $3,000-$4,000. “We’re very grateful to have one donated to us.”

“We struggle with the budgets and having all the equipment we need,” Cordera said, “and so when they’re able to give back and donate, it just really benefits the kids and helps out the program.”

Paul Rosa, the athletic director and head football coach at Wilcox High School, said the football operation’s budget largely goes toward safety items like helmets and pads.

“That stuff is expensive, so you don’t really have any left over for the bags, the tires, stuff that we actually really want,” Rosa said.

At Santa Clara High School, Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Nelson Gifford was also thankful for the “professional level” equipment being donated.

“The kids can kind of be inspired to know that their heroes worked and developed on that equipment,” said Gifford.

The donations were part of an initiative called 49ers Cares, which seeks to contribute $250,000 per year to community programs in Santa Clara over the next 20 years, according to the team.
