(KRON) — Disgraced former San Jose Councilmember Omar Torres entered a not guilty plea Monday on charges of child sex abuse, the Santa Clara District Attorney’s Office confirmed to KRON4.
A preliminary hearing has been set for April 28.
Torres, who represented District 3 until he resigned in November, has been in custody without bail since his arrest last year on November 5. A judge had previously ruled that Torres remained a threat to minors.

The charges against Torres are based on incidents that occurred between 1990 and 1999, when he allegedly raped a minor victim. Investigators said in a taped conversation between Torres and the victim, Torres admitted to sexually assaulting the victim 20 to 25 times. The alleged encounters started when the victim was 4 years old, a police report states, and continued until 1999, when Torres was 18 and the victim was 13.
If convicted, Torres is facing a maximum sentence of 24 years in prison.
