(KRON) — Three horses were killed while traveling home from a high school rodeo competition on Monday. The “heartbreaking” crash happened on Highway 20 east of Clear Lake in Lake County, according to a verified GoFundMe page.
A Redwood Valley family who owns the horses “just experienced every horse owner’s worst nightmare,” the page states. “While returning from a high school rodeo with their children and three horses, their RV suffered a mechanical issue, leading to a devastating accident. The horse trailer and RV tipped.”
The trailer tumbled over a cliff with three horses still inside. Shasta Jameson-Green, her husband, and their children walked away from the wreck without injuries. The horses did not make it out alive, the page states.
One of the horses, named Poco, and Poco’s young rider, Emerald, were expected to qualify for a high school state championship this year. “Poco was Emerald’s heart horse — the one she trusted with her life. He was the horse she planned to take to college to compete with, and together, they had built an incredible bond,” the page writes.
Emerald’s barrel riding horse, named Doug, was also killed in the crash. The third horse, named 45, “was the horse everyone adored,” according to the GoFundMe.
“These horses meant everything to this family. The love, time, and financial investment they dedicated to their children’s dreams were taken from them in an instant,” the page states.
The GoFundMe page is raising donations to help the family recover from the tragedy.
