Thieves use car to smash their way into Berkeley camera shop

BERKELEY, Calif. (KRON) — A camera shop in Berkeley is grappling with significant losses after thieves used a car to smash through its front entrance early Sunday morning, making off with over $50,000 in inventory.

The burglary occurred at Looking Glass Photo on Fifth Street, where the suspects rammed a car into the store’s entrance, causing extensive damage. The thieves were in and out in less than five minutes, escaping before police arrived shortly after 5:30 a.m.

“A minimum of $50,000 worth of inventory. The physical damage to the store is immeasurable,” said Jen Waicukauski, President and CEO of the camera shop.

This is the first burglary at the store’s new location since it moved there in July. Despite security measures, including a blockade installed by the landlord, the suspects managed to bypass these defenses.

Waicukauski expressed gratitude for the community’s support, noting that over $50,000 has been donated online to aid recovery efforts. The community’s support has been pivotal for Looking Glass Photo as it navigates the aftermath of the burglary.

“This outpouring has been everything,” Waicukauski said, reflecting on the contributions that have helped the business reopen.
