(BCN) — A 38-year-old man who was found with a fatal gunshot wound in Fairfield in January may have accidentally shot himself, according to police.
Joshua Costan, a Fairfield resident, was found dead lying along the road in the 2300 block of El Rancho Way around 7:15 a.m. on Jan. 18.
Police earlier marked the case as the first homicide in Fairfield for 2025. However, preliminary findings may have changed the minds of detectives, who said it may have been an “accidental shooting, with evidence suggesting the victim unintentionally discharged a firearm, resulting in a fatal self-inflicted gunshot wound.”
“Detectives, however, have not ruled out the possibility of homicide, pending a thorough analysis of forensic evidence,” Fairfield police said.
Police said they are working closely with forensic experts to determine the exact circumstances of Costan’s death.
