False warnings sparks L.A. County official’s proposal to temporarily shut down emergency alert system

(KTLA) – Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn is proposing that the county’s emergency alert system be disabled until a solution to the technical error that causes millions to erroneously receive evacuation warnings is fixed.

“I believe we need to disable the emergency alert system until we can get to the bottom of this issue,” Hahn said in a statement posted on X. “We need people to trust us, and at this time of extraordinary fear and devastation, anything less than a fully operational, dependable alert system is unacceptable.”

Hahn is calling on the Office of Emergency Management to find a solution by the end of the day Friday.

During a news conference on Friday, officials said that the messages did not come from a person or employee of the county but are instead automated.

Officials said technical specialists are working on a solution and pleaded with the public not to disable the alerts on their phones.
