PITTSBURG, Calif. (KRON) – One person is dead in Pittsburg after a driver slammed into a pole and a fire hydrant on Monday.
A car lost control near Gladstone Drive and barreled into a pole and fire hydrant, sending water shooting into the air. Local residents say that while this is not the first time this has happened, it has been the worst crash.
Only one vehicle was involved. Not long after impact, Pittsburg resident Sandra Hackett says the car was fully engulfed in flames.
Hackett says the flames were so hot and high that there’s no way she believes anyone could have made it out alive.
“It was such a hard hit. Very quickly went into flames,” she said.
Pittsburg police dispatch confirmed that the driver did not survive. Another local said drivers in the area need to slow down, and he wants to see more lights along the roadway.
“It’s also dark too, so they just zoom. They don’t see there’s like a curve around there and they just – bam – hit either these power poles or the transformers on the street,” said the man, named Raymond.
Police have not shared whether drugs and/or alcohol were factors in the crash.
