ORANGE – Orange Lutheran wanted some revenge and got it.
The Lancers beat JSerra in four sets, 25-19, 25-17, 21-25, 25-21, Thursday in a Trinity League match at Orange Lutheran High.
JSerra swept Orange Lutheran in last year’s CIF Southern Section Division 2 final.
Orange Lutheran senior outside hitter Maylynn Mitchell had a team-high 20 kills Thursday.
“It felt so good just to take a good win on them,” said Mitchell, who committed to Chaminade University of Honolulu.
Orange Lutheran is 22-9 overall and 1-1 in the Trinity League. The Lancers are No. 9 in the Orange County rankings. They were swept by No. 1 Mater Dei in their first league match.
No. 5 JSerra is 14-8 overall and 0-2 in league. The Lions lost to No. 3 Santa Margarita in five sets in their first league match.
JSerra took third set, 25-21, to stay alive in the match, but the Lions carried that momentum into the fourth set, surging to a 7-2 lead. The Lancers caught at 12-12 and from there outscored JSerra 13-9 for a 25-21 match-clinching victory.
Lancers senior outside hitter Kaniya Kimbrough had nine kills.
JSerra sophomore outside hitter Katherine Nowak had a team-leading 16 kills. Lions sophomore outside hitter Makayla Zieger contributed 12 kills.
Several players scored points or made great defensive plays for Orange Lutheran, among them seniors Jazlyunn Fu, Kaley Houser, Saniya Kimbrough and Adisyn Tognassini, junor Kenzie Houston and ace sophomore setter Marley Robinson.
“Ths was a great team win,” said Orange Lutheran coach Henry Valiente. “This year we’re so spread around with talent that we can trust anyone in any given moment. And that’s a beautiful thing about our team this year.”
