The most popular names among newborns in the United States born last year are Liam and Olivia, according to the Social Security Administration. The list, which tracked the most popular baby names in 2023, was released earlier in 2024 and broken down by gender.

For the previous year in 2022, the top 10 names remain the same in California. The order is slightly different, but the 10 remain the same in both the female and male categories.
In comparison to the U.S. overall in 2023, the top five male baby names across the U.S. (in order) are Liam, Noah, Oliver, James and Elijah. The top five female names are Olivia, Emma, Charlotte, Amelia and Sophie.
The Social Security Administration’s latest data shows that 3.58 million babies were born in the U.S. in 2023. That’s a slight decrease from 2022 when 3.66 million babies were born.
The Social Security Administration disclosed there are some limitations of its data, the government agency said on its website. The names do not include births in the U.S. territories — only in the 50 states and the District of Columbia.
