SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — San Francisco’s Transamerica Pyramid is set to be unveiled to the public Thursday following a billion-dollar renovation. The iconic building was designed by architect William Pereira, who is known for his futuristic designs that also include the flying-saucer-like Theme Building at Los Angeles International Airport.
The Pyramid, which first opened in 1972, was purchased by the SHVO real estate development and investment firm in 2020. Since then, the 853-foot-tall structure has undergone a years-long renovation with SHVO working in partnership with UK architecture firm Foster + Partners.

Most of the structure’s 763,000 square-footage is dedicated to office space. Notable tenants listed on the SHVO website include Northwestern Mutual, Callan Associates, Sterling Bank & Trust, and Baker Hostetler.
New on-site amenities at the Pyramid listed by SHVO include a fitness center, lounge, restaurants, meeting rooms and a sky bar. At ground level, the Pyramid has a redwood park that’s open to the public. As part of the building’s revitalization project, an outdoor gallery featuring works by the French artists Les Lalanne was installed in the redwood park.
The revised Transamerica Pyramid Center is set to be unveiled in a public ceremony at the Transamerica Redwood Park on Clay Street on Thursday. San Francisco Mayor London Breed and former mayor Willie Brown are among those who are expected to attend.
