East Bay freeway shooting suspect arrested

(KRON) — An alleged gunman behind a pair of Bay Area freeway shootings last month has been arrested, the California Highway Patrol announced Tuesday. Officers with the CHP’s Dublin Area office were dispatched on Aug. 3 at around 1:30 p.m. on a call regarding a freeway shooting on southbound Interstate 680 near Stoneridge Drive.

The victim, police said, had been shot in the shoulder while driving in heavy traffic. A second freeway shooting was reported about 45 minutes later on the Industrial Parkway onramp to Interstate 880 northbound.

CHP Hayward officers responded to the second call and interviewed the victim, who was uninjured, according to officials.

Detectives with the CHP Golden Gate Division Special Investigations Unit (SIU) responded and realized there were similarities in the description of the vehicle responsible for the two shootings. Using investigative tools including Flock Safety cameras, detectives identified the vehicle and 47-year-old Damien Lamont Harris as the suspect in both cases.

Detectives obtained a warrant for the suspect’s arrest on charges that included attempted murder, assault with a firearm and discharging a firearm from a vehicle. Search warrants for addresses he was associated with were also obtained, police said.

On Aug. 29, CHP SIU detectives assisted by the Golden Gate Division Warrant Service Team, the Fairfield Police Department and the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office served warrants at residences in Fairfield and Fremont.

Harris was located at the Fairfield location and taken into custody without incident, officials said. During a subsequent search, officers located several firearms, ammunition, and suspected narcotics.

Harris was booked into Solano County Jail on an outstanding warrant and additional charges related to items discovered during the search.

“The California Highway Patrol will not tolerate incidents of violence on our freeways,” said CHP Golden Gate Division Chief Don Goodbrand. “The addition of investigative tools, such as Flock Safety cameras, provides us with more resources that assist us in identifying and arresting those responsible for these inexcusable acts on Bay Area roadways.”
