ST. LOUIS — Tyler Glasnow spent years dealing with a sore elbow before finally undergoing Tommy John surgery in August 2021.
Three years later, he said he’s still dealing with the aftereffects.
“I think after the surgery, there’s just like, tightness within that because they kind of double-looped that ligament in there, and for a while after there’s going to be a little bit of space created so there’s going to be some tightness and that’s kind of all it felt like,” said Glasnow who felt that tightness after throwing his usual between-starts bullpen session on Wednesday in Milwaukee. “So it is a similar feeling, you know what I mean, just from post-op stuff. So it was nothing super concerning to me.”
It was enough of a concern to the Dodgers for them to put him on the Injured List Friday and recall Bobby Miller to start in his place on Saturday.
“I feel fine now,” he said Saturday. “I think that’s the most frustrating thing. I don’t know, I didn’t want to go on the IL but I think the decision was made. And I think maybe I’m not logically thinking or something, but I feel fine. I just think their main priority, like I said, is the postseason. So I guess I’m just on the IL now.”
The Dodgers didn’t make the move until just before the first pitch of Friday’s game, using Glasnow’s roster spot to add Justin Wrobleski who started that night’s game. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said the move was made so late because the Dodgers were waiting for the results of an MRI of Glasnow’s elbow and convincing him that going on the IL was the best course of action.
“I spoke my mind, and they spoke theirs, and they ultimately get the decision,” Glasnow said. “It’s about trying to decide the best decision for me and the team. I trust all the medical staff and the coaches and front office and if that’s what they want to do, that’s what they want to do.”
Given how he feels now, Glasnow probably could have continued pitching but “their main priority and my main priority is (being ready for) the postseason.”
“I don’t want to go on the IL, I want to pitch,” he said. “So, I’m not super happy about it, I guess. But looking at it, If anything were to happen … and you look back, it would be a stupid decision for me to go out there and try to get two more starts. It’s a balancing act, I guess. And my main priority is to win a World Series, so that’s what my sights are set on now.”
NEW LIFE
At the trade deadline, Kevin Kiermaier’s Toronto Blue Jays were 14 games back in the American League East. Michael Kopech’s Chicago White Sox had the worst record in baseball and were on a historically bad pace.
Both have been re-invigorated by their move up in the standings.
“They’ve pumped life into me,” said Kiermaier who plans to retire after this season. “Playoff atmosphere. A team that plays in October every year. This is what I want and my situation earlier in the year in Toronto was – I love the guys over there but when you’re not winning, life’s not as fun. So coming over here being first in the division and going to battle with these guys each day is an absolute blast.”
Kopech finds himself closing games for a first-place team now. He has faced 27 batters since joining the Dodgers, struck out 13 of them and allowed just one hit and walked one.
“This is a special ballclub here. I don’t think I have to even address that,” Kopech said of the change in perspective. “I think we know what we have. But to be able to be a part of it means the world to me.”
REHAB ROUNDUP
Chris Taylor started a minor-league injury-rehabilitation assignment Friday night with Triple-A Oklahoma City, going 1 for 4 with an RBI double. Taylor has been out since July 24 with a groin muscle injury.
Blake Treinen was scheduled to start his rehab assignment with Double-A Tulsa on Saturday. Treinen is on the Injured List with a hip injury.
Tommy Edman and Max Muncy are wrapping up their rehab assignments with OKC this weekend. Edman has played center field and shortstop and had five hits in his first 15 at-bats. The Dodgers plan to activate him on Monday, according to Roberts. Muncy has gone 4 for 18 and is expected to be activated on Tuesday.
