Space cadets will have to build their own coaster from virtual Lego bricks before boarding the new Galacticoaster if they want to save the galaxy from a giant Lego asteroid threatening to destroy Legoland California.
The new Lego Galaxy themed land featuring an indoor roller coaster ride through the dark and a pair of outer space-themed kids rides will debut March 6 at Legoland California in Carlsbad. An identical Galacticoaster without the themed land will open on Feb. 27 at Legoland Florida.

The $90 million project installing twin coasters on both coasts marks the largest Legoland investment in the history of parent company Merlin Entertainments.
Legoland California invited the media to a hard hat tour of the construction site on Thursday, Jan. 15 where more than 500 workers have been transforming the former Fun Town area of the park into the Lego Galaxy themed land.

The new land takes over the former Legoland Driving School attraction, which has been relocated next door to a spot where the retired Fun Town Police and Fire Academy attraction was once located.
Visitors will pass through Legoland’s two newest lands — Dino Valley and Lego Movie World — on their way to Lego Galaxy on the west side of the park.

The world’s first Lego Galaxy themed land based on Lego brick building sets from the 1970s to today could serve as a blueprint for future outer space-themed lands at Legoland parks around the world.
The centerpiece of the new land is Legoland Spaceport 886, an homage to Lego Space Buggy building set 886. Visitors can pose for photos in a lifesize version of the Lego Space Buggy at the heart of the land.

Work has progressed rapidly in recent weeks with crews programming the G-Force Test Facility spinning thrill ride, helicopter ride vehicles getting unwrapped on the Duplo Launch and Land ride and water dummy test runs taking place on the Galacticoaster.
The Galacticoaster will send riders on an exploratory mission into the uncharted Lego Galaxy in custom-designed Lego spacecraft inside a 30,000-square foot building.

The first-of-its-kind indoor coaster built by ridemaker ART Engineering of Germany will reach a top speed of 40 mph over a 1,500-foot-long track. Each ride vehicle will rotate and spin to direct the rider’s focus as they encounter UFOs and dodge an asteroid field.
The 10-minute experience starts in a Mission Briefing Room where Lego astronaut Biff Dipper lays out the adventure. Riders will be drafted as space cadets who must destroy an asteroid heading for Lego Galaxy.

Biff will lay out the last-ditch Plan C after Plan A (shoot the asteroid with a laser) and Plan B (catch the asteroid with a big net) failed to stop the Lego asteroid. Riders must find the elusive Lego brick separator — used to take apart stubbornly stuck Lego bricks — to break up the Lego asteroid.
The Biff Dipper animatronic, the first robotic minifigure created by the Merlin Magic Making creative arm of the company, features nine body movements and 45 facial motions.

Riders will be divided into groups of four as they head into the Customization Bay where they will design their own coaster cars using virtual Lego bricks at 20 individual digital screen terminals.
Each team of four must work together to choose a nose, tail, wings and special feature for their coaster car — with five choices in each category. The teams are given 20 seconds to decide on each of the four categories.
Designing the virtual coaster car requires teamwork, collaboration and concessions, which could prove challenging for a family of four with small children or random strangers paired together in line.

Teams that fail to choose within 20 seconds will be assigned a random body part for their virtual coaster car. That could prove fortunate for fans searching for Easter Eggs in the system, with at least two secret selections hidden from the main options.
Wild card option number five in each category will always be kooky and wacky for those who like to think outside the box — if you think your coaster car would look good with a crab nose, hamburger wings, scorpion tail or balloon bouquet.

Legoland hopes the 625 possible combinations in the build your own coaster experience will make Galacticoaster addictively re-rideable.
Riders will tap an RFID wristband on the digital screen terminal to pair their unique car design with the four-member team as they head to the coaster load station.

The four-person cars will be dispatched in pairs as the riders head off on the coaster ride portion of the experience. Riders will see augmented reality versions of themselves aboard their custom-designed spacecraft multiple times throughout the ride.
The Lego Galaxy themed land will also feature a tot spot playground, Rocket Assembly Bay brick play area, Orbital Outpost gift shop and three restaurants.

The UFO intergalactic food court, which stands for Ultimate Food Outlet, will offer six food stations themed to Lego chefs offering culinary twists on dishes from their home planets. Kids will recognize the foods as pizza, quesadillas, tacos, chicken sandwiches and noodles.
The Stardust Treats dessert parlor will satisfy your galactic sweet tooth while Satellite Bites will serve up burgers and fries.
