HUNTINGTON BEACH — The Corona del Mar boys basketball team was practically unstoppable from beyond the 3-point arc in a 98-77 victory over Orange Lutheran in a Feast Week tournament game Saturday at Marina High School.
Corona del Mar coach Jason Simco said the point total is a single-game record for the Sea Kings (3-0), who nearly reached the 100-point mark by hitting 16 3-pointers.
“We shot the lights out, and we can do that at times,” Simco said. “We have practices where we do that. But then we have nights where we don’t do that, and we need to guard a little bit more. For how many shots we made, we were in transition defense too much. But it was a fun game to watch. They share the ball. They don’t care who gets the credit.”
Junior guard Ryan Mansouri led the scoring barrage for the Sea Kings with 27 points, with five 3-pointers.
Junior Maxell Scott scored 26, including four 3-pointers, and senior guard Oliver Nakra had 23 points, with four 3-pointers.
“I think all three of us put in a lot of work with our shots,” Nakra said. “We get a lot of shots up in practice and outside of practice. We’ve just got to trust that the work is going to show and it did tonight. We were confident, we let it fly, and we were hitting shots.”
Simco commended the effort by the No. 7-ranked Lancers (5-2) and said 77 points would be enough to win most games.
Josh King scored 29 to lead the Lancers.
The Sea Kings came out making of their shots and outscored the Lancers, 31-15, in the first quarter.
Scott scored 17 in the quarter, with three 3-pointers, which was merely a preview of what was to come.
The hot shooting continued into the second, as the Sea Kings scored 26 points, with seven baskets 3-point distance.
Corona del Mar didn’t limit itself to opportunities from beyond the arc.
The Sea Kings drove to the basket and often drew fouls, scoring 21 points from the free throw line and even drew two fouls on a pair of successful 3-pointers.
In another Feast Week game:
Fairmont Prep 68, Los Alamitos 56: David Abisogun scored 12 of his game-high 20 points from the free throw line to lead the No. 5-ranked Huskies (5-1).
Abisogun’s basket and free throw put the Huskies ahead, 50-40, early in the fourth.
Tyler Lopez hit a 3-pointer followed by a basket off of a steal on the inbound pass to get No. 11-ranked Los Alamitos (1-3) to within five.
But from there, the Huskies took care of the basketball, worked the clock and hit their free throws down the stretch to pull away.
Sean Lee scored 10 to lead the Griffins.
