(KRON) — A man was arrested and their motorcycle was impounded following a high-speed chase with a California Highway Patrol officer across the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge earlier this week.
The chase began when a tailing California Highway Patrol officer allegedly saw a motorcycle pop a wheelie across multiple lanes of traffic and between moving vehicles on the eastbound side of the Bay Bridge.
“[The officer] pulled up behind the motorcycle and activated the patrol motorcycle’s emergency red and blue lights along with the siren,” CHP said. “The motorcyclist looked back and waved towards [the officer] to ‘come and get me,’ before rapidly accelerating away.”
The officer entered a high-speed pursuit with the motorcyclist, reaching speeds of 70 mph through areas of slow traffic.
“The motorcyclist turned it up another notch and began splitting other vehicles in an unsafe manner, even splitting another motorcycle and sedan already sharing a lane,” CHP said. “Upon observing this reckless behavior, [the officer] discontinued the pursuit for safety reasons.”
The motorcyclist continued east across the bridge, allegedly riding faster than 100 mph along the freeway median and shoulder to pass slower moving traffic. A CHP helicopter began following the motorcycle as it exited the Yerba Buena Tunnel.
The driver continued to their home in Berkeley before realizing that a CHP helicopter was flying overhead, according to CHP.
“The motorcyclist continued on his way into Berkeley, driving home and pulling into his driveway as if nothing had happened at all,” CHP said. “[The man entered] a mad dash trying to push the motorcycle out of sight down the driveway, then a mad sprint along the side fence line and into the backyard, jumping over the fence, and onto a rooftop, traversing other rooftops before finally figuring out there [was] nowhere to run and nowhere to hide from the eyes in the sky.”
The Berkeley Police Department responded to the area and arrested the man with help from the pursuing CHP helicopter. The man was booked into the county jail. His motorcycle had no license plate and was not currently registered, CHP said.
“We’ve said it time and time again, the freeways, highways, bridges, county roads, and public roadways are not a raceway or a movie set for your own personal enjoyment,” CHP said. “These locations are inappropriate places for unnecessary, unsafe, and dangerous antics. If you think challenging a CHP officer to ‘come get me’ is a fun thing to do, or you’re doing it for social media content, think again.”
