The Los Angeles Dodgers recorded a hard-earned opening day win early Tuesday morning by coming back to defeat the Chicago Cubs 4-1 in Tokyo.
The Boys in Blue were down 1-0 early in the game but took the lead on a fielder’s choice in the 5th inning and never looked back. The team’s vaunted bullpen pitched four scoreless innings to seal the win.
The Dodgers began the game shorthanded without stars Mookie Betts or Freddie Freeman in the lineup.
Freeman was scratched from the game with left rib discomfort. The eight-time All-Star hit .282 with 22 homers and 89 RBIs last season.
Shortstop Mookie Betts was also out because of an illness.
The Dodgers and Cubs are playing a two-game series in Japan to open the season.
