Nixon Library remembers first lady with Day of Service

First Lady Pat Nixon once said, “People are my project.”

Those simple words and their call to action continued to be celebrated on what would have been Nixon’s 113th birthday.

The Nixon Presidential Library & Museum hosts the Pat Nixon Day of Service each year on or around her birthday, March 16, 1912.

This year, the day featured a community involvement fair with some of the organizations Nixon was involved in so the public could learn more and get involved themselves.

The American Cancer Society, American Legion, American Red Cross, Girl Scouts, Town and Gown of USC and 4-H were some of the groups at the fair.

“Any time you can connect with people in your community you’re making a difference no matter how big or small,” said Carrie Anderson, marketing coordinator of the Richard Nixon Foundation, which helped organize the fair.

The event also featured a wreath laying by members of the Yorba Linda Girl Scout Honor Guard.

Nixon was a troop leader for her daughters well before moving to the White House. Her support of the Girl Scouts and volunteerism continued until her death in 1993.
