(KRON) — The Monterey County District Attorney’s Office released a photo of a suspect’s knife recovered from a fatal shooting involving a California Highway Patrol (CHP) officer.
The incident occurred March 15 on Highway 101 at Ralph Lane, about halfway between Prunedale and Salinas. CHP said an officer responded at 7:07 p.m. to a report of a solo vehicle collision into a guardrail.
One minute later, shots were fired by the officer, which ended in the death of James Frederick Combs, 42, of Salinas. The officer was not injured, but Combs was “armed with a knife at the time of the incident,” said the D.A. The knife is pictured below.

The D.A.’s office said it went to the scene on the day of the incident to start an independent investigation. Combs’ family has been notified, the D.A. confirmed.
It is not clear what led to the incident. The Monterey County District Attorney’s Office said the circumstances surrounding the shooting are actively being probed.
Anyone with information tied to the incident is asked to contact the District Attorney’s Bureau of Investigations at (831) 755-5070.
