(KRON) — A 19-year-old man was charged with first-degree murder on Tuesday for the shooting death of Nathaniel Lee McCowan in San Leandro.
The teenager, Robert Donnelle Hughes, allegedly shot McCowan during an armed robbery that happened on April 1, 2024, according to the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office. McCowan was 26 years old.
The murder case is one of the first to be prosecuted under the county’s new district attorney, Ursula Jones Dickson. Prosecutors added special enhancements to the murder charges.
“This senseless loss of life is the result of a robbery with a gun,” Jones Dickson said. “We cannot ignore the potential for physical harm, and death, associated with violent robberies in our community. We all must work harder to encourage less gun violence, and to ensure that when gun violence occurs, we support victims and families of victims as they seek peace and justice.”
According to jail inmate records, Hughes was arrested on February 27 in San Leandro. He is being held in Santa Rita Jail in Dublin without bail.
Hughes is scheduled to appear at the East County Hall of Justice on Thursday for an arraignment. “If convicted, Mr. Hughes could be sentenced to a term of 25 years to life in prison,” the DA’s office wrote.
