SANTA CLARA COUNTY, Calif. (KRON) — A potentially looming strike from Valley Transit Authority will not happen this week, according to union representatives. Union reps told KRON4 News they have a meeting set for Friday to discuss next steps.
As many as 1,500 VTA employees were rumored to have been ready to strike, a move that could cripple bus and light rail service across the South Bay. Despite six months of negotiations, the VTA and the union have yet to reach an agreement.
The existing labor agreement between the Amalgamated Transit Union, or ATU Local 265, and the VTA expired at midnight on Tuesday. The main sticking point in the negotiations seem to be wages.
The VTA said it has offered the union a 9% increase in wages over three years. The union said it is looking for something closer to 18%. The transit agency said it is willing to continue negotiations and hopes to avoid a strike.
Should workers elect to go on strike, VTA is warning riders it does not have the resources to keep operating as usual. The union, meanwhile, maintains it is trying to avoid disrupting people’s lives.
