OAKLAND, Calif. (KRON) — Shauncy Jackson, a multifaceted entrepreneur in Oakland, has transformed her backyard into a hub for community engagement while managing a clothing line and a non-profit organization. Jackson’s non-profit, Oakland Don’t Play, Inc., offers a safe space for community events and supports local youth through initiatives like backpack giveaways and holiday parties.
Her clothing line, also named Oakland Don’t Play, funds these activities, emphasizing the unique culture and pride of Oakland.
“I feel like if we give the youth an opportunity or somewhere safe to be then, they won’t be in the streets having issues,” Jackson said, highlighting her motivation for creating a community-focused space.
Marquisha Jelinek, a local barber, collaborates with Jackson by offering free haircuts to the community, stating, “I think she makin’ a big change from giving back to messin’ with the kids.”
Jackson’s mother, Jolene Gaines, expressed her pride, saying, “She’s a mom. She’s an entrepreneur. She’s a community advisor. She gives back to the community.”
Jackson’s retail store, converted from a storage container, operates from noon to six o’clock, Tuesday through Saturday. The store’s profits support various community events, reinforcing Jackson’s commitment to uplifting Oakland.
In addition to her entrepreneurial ventures, Jackson works as a technical program manager at Salesforce and raises her six-year-old son, Brandon Jackson II. Her ability to juggle these responsibilities is a testament to her dedication and resilience.
Jackson’s assistant, known as Sunflower, helps manage the events and operations, contributing to the close-knit team of young women who are setting an example for others in the community.
Jackson’s efforts are partly a response to negative incidents in Oakland, such as the killing of Nina Wilson and the presence of the Proud Boys, which she believes do not represent the true spirit of the city. “We are the home of the Black Panthers. We got a lot of pride and dignity in our community,” Jackson said.
The store operates from noon to 6 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday. Outside a sign reads, “If the gates are open, we’re open.”
