Video: Police agencies warn residents of jewelry swap scam

(KRON) – Multiple Bay Area police departments are informing residents of an increasing scam, known as the jewelry swap scam.

This scam typically happens when a suspect, usually in a vehicle, approaches a victim and asks for directions or help, according to the Milpitas Police Department. As a gesture of gratitude, the suspect will give the victim a hug or a piece of jewelry. While the suspect is placing the jewelry on the victim, they are stealing the jewelry that the victim has on.

A Milpitas resident who was a victim of the scam provided police with a video of a suspect stealing her jewelry.

The Santa Clara Police Department provided tips on how residents can combat this scheme, including:

  • Stay vigilant, especially when walking alone.
  • Be cautious of strangers approaching you, particularly those in vehicles.
  • Avoid accepting gifts or engaging in close physical contact with strangers.

For people who witness this scam or fall victim to it, SCPD suggests these actions:

  • Call 911 immediately for crimes in progress.
  • If possible, take note of the suspect’s description and their vehicle (make, model, color, license plate). This information can assist law enforcement.
  • If the incident has already occurred, contact the Santa Clara Police Department’s non-emergency line at (408) 615-5580 to report it.

In the City of Santa Clara, a woman lost her wedding ring from her late husband due to this scam, according to police.
