OAKLAND, Calif. (KRON) — Students at an Oakland high school walked out of their classes Monday morning to protest the Trump administration’s immigration policies. The protest was part of a larger movement known as “A Day Without Immigrants,” aimed at sending a message to the federal government and President Donald Trump.
“I walked out today for immigrants and also my family who came here,” said Cristal Barrosojuarez, a participant in the rally.
“It’s been very difficult and hard and hurtful. Especially the deportations of family. Children being ripped away from their families just for wanting a better life,” Barrosojuarez added.
Since taking office in January, President Trump has advocated for the mass deportation of undocumented immigrants and has increased efforts to limit immigration and enhance border security.
Following the initial rally outside the school, the group of approximately 50 students marched down MacArthur Boulevard and held a second rally near Lake Merritt. The students’ demonstration highlights the ongoing concerns within immigrant communities about the impact of federal immigration policies on families and individuals seeking a better life in the United States.
