SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — A Pittsburg man was hit with several charges in connection to thefts at a San Francisco Walgreens, the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office announced.
Marcos Smith-Pequeno, 28, allegedly stole more than $4,000 worth of merchandise from the Walgreens at 1333 Castro St. before returning the same day and stealing more merchandise worth $12,000.
Smith-Pequeno had accomplices in both thefts, DA Brooke Jenkins said. Six other suspects joined him for the first robbery and three others were there for the second one.
“Organized retail theft is a major driver of crime and public safety concern for our neighborhoods and businesses,” Jenkins said. “It is imperative that all parts of the criminal justice system, including the courts, recognize the profound impact these crimes have on our community and take them seriously. We must all work collaboratively to dismantle these criminal enterprises systematically.”
During the first robbery, one suspect hit a Walgreens employee who was calling 911 with an umbrella, the DA’s office said.
During the second, the thieves allegedly broke display cases and shelves and threw items at employees and customers. They are accused of causing roughly $1,000 in damages.
Smith-Pequeno and a juvenile accomplice tried to change their clothes on the street after the Feb. 25 robbery. He was arrested after tripping while trying to run away from officers, Jenkins’ office said.
The court opted to release Smith-Pequeno as he awaits trial despite a motion filed by Jenkins’ office to keep him detained. His next court date is March 13.
