Future of SF’s Presidio Park in question as Trump moves to eliminate trust

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — President Donald Trump is moving to abolish the federal trust that oversees San Francisco’s historic Presidio Park. The president’s executive order says the trust is unnecessary and should be eliminated.

For the immediate future, SF’s Presidio will look and operate the way it’s been for decades. The park features 1,500 acres of land and, in the 18th century, was once a Spanish fort. The Presidio became a national park in the late 80s.

In 1996, the Presidio Trust was formed to oversee upkeep and ensure visitors could continue to enjoy the park.

The Presidio received $200 million in funding in 2023 from the U.S. Department of the Interior. At the time, Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi, who has championed the park, said, “This critical federal funding will ensure the Presidio’s spectacular front window to the Bay is maintained by renewing and replacing aged utilities and their infrastructure.”

Pelosi, along with the Presidio Trust, are bracing for a legal battle in response to Trump’s executive order.

In a statement to KRON4, a Presidio Trust spokesperson said, “The Presidio Trust has not received regular annual appropriations from Congress since 2013, instead relying on the funds earned by leasing the historic buildings that the Trust has renovated.”

The Presidio Trust has two weeks to respond, in which it says it will present a report on its activities and why the trust is necessary.
