Bigfoot could soon be an official California symbol

SAN DIEGO (FOX5/KUSI) — California has some well-known state symbols, such as the poppy flower and the California quail as the official bird. In recent times, it has added an official bat and even an official dinosaur.

Now it could soon have an official cryptid. Not sure what that is? It’s a creature that has been claimed to exist but has never been proven to exist.

You may already know of a few of these: the Loch Ness Monster, the chupacabra and the Yeti.

A California legislator has introduced a bill that would make Bigfoot, also known as Sasquatch, the official cryptid.

The text of the bill reads for now: It is the intent of the Legislature to enact legislation that would designate Bigfoot as the official state cryptid.

Whether on purpose or by chance, the bill’s number, AB 666, happens to refer to another otherworldly figure. The bill will have its first committee hearing in mid-March.

Bigfoot has long been associated with Northern California, but is also strongly associated with Washington State and has reportedly been spotted as far away as New York and Georgia.

A famous videotape supposedly captured Bigfoot, or a person in a costume, walking along a creek north of Eureka, California, where the majestic redwood trees, the state’s official tree, are abundant.
