(KRON) — A father of two was killed while skiing in Lake Tahoe’s mountainous backcountry on Monday, the sheriff’s office said. El Dorado County emergency dispatchers received a 911 call just after 4 p.m. on February 17 about a skier who was missing near Luther Pass.
Frederic Dross, 46, never returned from the mountain and his vehicle was found in a parking area by Powderhouse Peak, the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office said. Dross was found deceased a short time later by friends in an avalanche area.
“Due to the dangerous snow conditions the recovery of the deceased began was postponed until early Tuesday,” EDCSO wrote.

At the time of the deadly incident, ski resorts around Lake Tahoe were packed with people hitting the slopes for a long holiday weekend. Dross was an experienced skier, law enforcement officials said.
Crews used controlled explosives on Tuesday and faced “extremely hazardous recovery conditions” while traversing through deep, unstable snow. It took crews 11 hours to reach the deceased skier and hoist his body out of the backcountry using a helicopter, the sheriff’s office said.
Dross was a South Lake Tahoe resident and native.

A GoFundMe page states, “He was a husband, father of two beautiful young girls, our dear friend, and a tireless solar warrior. He was skiing in his hometown of South Lake Tahoe where he suffered a fatal skiing accident.”
Dross is remembered as an energetic and positive person who dedicated his career to advancing the solar industry, the page states. The GoFundMe page is raising donations to support his wife and daughters.
