(BCN) — Fairfield police arrested a man Tuesday after he allegedly attacked a gas station worker in what authorities are calling a hate crime. Police said they received a call at 10:20 a.m. Tuesday regarding a fight with a weapon at the Sinclair gas station in Cordelia.
The caller said a man entered the store, walked behind the counter, and attacked a female employee. The employee retrieved a wooden stick to defend herself, but the suspect allegedly took it from her and used it to continue assaulting her.
Officers arrived and, after a struggle, arrested 55-year-old Conrad Alvarez.
Police said the alleged attack qualified as a hate crime because of comments Alvarez allegedly made during the attack. Police declined to specify what the comments were.
Alvarez was booked into Solano County Jail on suspicion of attempted murder and a hate crime enhancement.
