(KRON) — On Wednesday, Apple unveiled the new iPhone 16e, calling it a “new addition to the iPhone 16 lineup that offers powerful capabilities at a more affordable price.” The phone runs on Apple’s iOS 18 operating system
The phone is available in two matte finishes — black and white — with colored cases available as accessories. It’s powered by Apple’s latest-generation A18 chip and boasts a 6-core CPU that’s up to 80% faster than the A13 Bionic chip on an iPhone 11, according to Apple.
AI capabilities
The iPhone 16e is built for Apple’s AI platform, Apple Intelligence, which is designed to “help you write, express yourself, and get things done effortlessly,” according to Apple. It also has a Clean Up tool that allows users to remove “distracting elements” in images.
The phone’s natural language search capability allows users to search for any photo or video in the Photos app “simply by describing what they are looking for.”
ChatGPT access is also integrated into the phone’s Writing Tools and Siri, allowing users to access the AI platform without having to switch apps.
“iPhone 16e packs in the features our users love about the iPhone 16 lineup, including breakthrough battery life, fast performance powered by the latest-generation A18 chip, an innovative 2-in-1 camera system, and Apple Intelligence,” said Kaiann Drance, Apple’s vice president of Worldwide iPhone Product Marketing. “We’re so excited for iPhone 16e to complete the lineup as a powerful, more affordable option to bring the iPhone experience to even more people.”

That phone is equipped with a 2-in-1 camera system that Apple describes as “perfect for capturing everyday moments and important memories.” The camera includes Night mode and Portrait mode and a 48MP Fusion camera capable of taking super-high-resolution photos.
There’s also an integrated 2x Telephoto feature which Apple calls “the equivalent of two cameras in one,” that can zoom in with optical quality to “get closer to the subject” and allow users to “easily frame their shot.”
The phone’s front-facing TrueDepth camera includes autofocus for sharper close-ups and improved selfies.
Apple iPhone 16e price
The phone, which goes on sale later this month, retails for $599. That’s $200 less than Apple’s current iPhone 16, which starts at $799 and $400 less than the iPhone 16 Pro, which starts at $999.
