San Ramon Valley Unified teachers rally against cuts

SAN RAMON, Calif. (KRON) — Teachers in the San Ramon Valley Unified School District (SVUSD) are rallying Tuesday to protest proposed budget cuts that would reduce staff and slash student services.

The district said it needs to close a $26 million budget deficit. To reach that goal, it has announced plans to, among other things, eliminate management and administrative positions, eliminate custodial staff, reduce the number of counselors, increase class sizes and reduce funding for things like travel, technology and substitute teachers.

Teachers and staff expressed their frustration with the deep cuts being proposed by SVUSD during a lunchtime rally outside Doughtery Valley High School in San Ramon.

“I think a lot of us feel betrayed, because we understand declining enrollment. We understand budget issues,” said Laura Finco, president of the San Ramon Valley Education Association. “But, we also understand that it’s management’s responsibility to ensure and safeguard our kids.”

The school district said it will work with the unions representing teachers and staff to try to make the process as painless as possible.

Even if the district reaches the desired budget savings, there could be even more cuts and changes in the years ahead. Layoff notices related to this round of cuts could go out by Match 15.
