SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — Two women were hired for one of the most unusual jobs in the San Francisco Bay Area. They will live and work at East Brother Light Station, a historic site perched on a tiny island in the middle of the bay.
Danielle La Vigne and Rachel “Rae” Colvin were hired as inn keepers who will oversee the light station, East Brother Light Station officials announced this week.

The small island is located off Point Molate in the strait between San Francisco and San Pablo bays. It is home to a historic lighthouse and fog signal that dates back to 1874. Within the past 150 years, 34 keepers have lived on the island, according to EBLS.
Starting on April 1, La Vigne and Colvin will take over managing a five-room inn and begin living on the island. The duo is no stranger to life at sea. La Vigne and Colvin currently reside on a 70-foot-long sailing ship near Santa Barbara.

La Vigne has a boat captain license and previously operated tour boats. She also managed bars, served as a chef, and worked in construction and maintenance. Colvin’s life experiences include working as a lifeguard, trail guide, bartender, gardener, security guard, and construction contractor.
