San Mateo police searching for driver after man killed in suspected hit-and-run

(KRON) — The San Mateo Police Department is searching for a driver who is believed to have struck and killed a man on Saturday night.

The fatal hit-and-run happened just before 9 p.m. west of the 1400 block of Fashion Island Boulevard, approaching the San Mateo Bridge. A 56-year-old man was killed.

SMPD is searching for the suspect and requesting video from potential witnesses. People who have camera footage showing the area around 1400 Fashion Island Blvd. between 8:45 and 9:00 p.m. are asked to review that footage. Additionally, any drivers traveling east or westbound on Fashion Island Blvd. to or from South Norfolk St. at that time are asked to check dashcam footage for vehicles potentially involved.

Police also sent a message to the driver:

“We understand how incredibly difficult this can be for not only the victim’s family, but also for the driver of the vehicle. If you are the person responsible for this tragic accident, we encourage you to find the strength and courage to come forward vs. us having to find you. Leaving the scene of an accident is not an easy thing to carry and we understand that it is likely weighing on you. The stress of the unknown can be a heavy burden to bear, but we urge you to do the right thing and come forward.”

SMPD did not release the name of the victim. Anyone with information is asked to email jjolivette@cityofsanmateo.org.
