SONOMA COUNTY, Calif. (KRON) — A new traffic study warns that residents in Glen Ellen, Sonoma County, could face up to nine hours of gridlock during an evacuation if another fire occurs.
The study, known as the Sonoma Area Fire Evacuation Study (SAFE), highlights major problem spots in evacuation routes, particularly Arnold Drive and Highway 12, which are deemed inadequate for the current population.
“There was nothing left of our house,” said Bean Anderson, a Glen Ellen resident and engineer, recalling the devastation from the 2017 fires that destroyed over 400 homes in Sonoma County.
Kevin Padian, a Sonoma Valley resident and former East Bay fire board member, described the situation as a death trap, warning that people could be trapped in their cars during a fire.
The Valley of the Moon Alliance funded the independent study to address these concerns and is organizing a community information meeting on February 24 at Altimira Middle School.
The community hopes that the new findings will prompt local leaders to make necessary changes to improve evacuation routes and prevent future disasters.
