San Francisco expands dorms at San Bruno jail amid rising inmate population

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — The San Francisco Sheriff’s Office announced Friday that it has reopened two more dorms in the previously closed Annex at County Jail #3 in San Bruno to make room for a growing inmate population. Officials said the increase is tied to the city’s public safety efforts to reduce crime.

One of the dorms will used for inmates with substance-abuse issues, providing access to individual case management services, treatment groups, and referrals for continued care after release.

“Our staff has worked diligently at the Annex to accomplish improvements to plumbing, outdoor
recreation areas, and our security system in order to make room for a growing jail population,” said Sheriff Paul Miyamoto. “We are proud to announce that we have decided to have a dedicated housing unit at the Annex specifically for individuals who suffer from substance abuse disorders so that they can receive the cognitive behavioral classes and communal support they need to get back up on their feet.”

The Sheriff’s Office said the jail population has increased by 35 percent over the past two years, with more than 1,200 prisoners compared to 816 in 2023.

Officials plan to open a third dorm next month.
