(KRON) — The Berkeley Fire Department said a Monday morning house fire that claimed the lives of one person and a pet has been ruled as accidental. It is not yet known what sparked the blaze.
Berkeley Fire said the fire was reported at 4:35 a.m. on the 1000 block of Cedar Street and a fire engine arrived at the scene within minutes.
Officials confirmed four people in the home were taken to a local hospital for emergency care, but one of the victims later succumbed to injuries sustained in the fire.
Investigators said the fire was contained to one bedroom, but that there was extensive smoke damage throughout the home. Berkeley Fire believes that the cost of home repairs could be around $100,000.
