San Jose man indicted in violent assault of mailman

(KRON) – A San Jose man accused of punching a mail carrier, breaking his nose, and fracturing his left orbital socket was indicted for assault and robbery, according to the Department of Justice.

On Nov. 22, 2024, according to the DOJ, Robert Cordova, also known as Robert Cordona, was accused of sticking his whole upper body inside a U.S. Postal Service letter carrier’s truck while the mail carrier was at the back of the truck. The mailman felt the truck move and then saw Cordova and confronted him.

Cordova left the truck and punched the mailman in the face repeatedly, said the DOJ. After the mailman fell to the ground, the DOJ says Cordova “attempted to gouge the letter carrier’s eyes.”

The alleged assault occurred at the intersection of Taylor Street and 13th Street.

The mail carrier was taken to the hospital and diagnosed with a broken nose and a fractured left orbital socket.

If convicted, Cordova, 49, faces a maximum sentence of 25 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and a five-year term of supervised release on the count of robbery of a United States mail carrier, and 20 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and a three-year term of supervised release on the count of assaulting a federal employee.

Cordova was found by San Jose Police Department officers in the backyard of a house near the alleged robbery and was arrested. The mailman identified Cordova as his assailant, according to the DOJ.

Cordova was charged on Jan. 15 and was indicted eight days later.

Cordova is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday for a detention hearing to determine if he should be jailed during the court preceedings.
