(BCN) — One person and a family pet were killed in an early morning fire at a Berkeley residence Monday.
Berkeley firefighters responded to the fire at 4:35 a.m. and arrived at the 1000 block of Cedar Street to find smoke and flames coming from a residence.
Fire crews broke an exterior window and gained entry, using a tactic called “vent, enter, search,” according to a press release from the fire department. The tactic is used when a rescue must be made immediately, and crews cannot wait for other equipment or personnel to arrive.
Four victims were rescued and taken to a hospital, where one died from their injuries.
A pet also died in the fire, but a fire department spokesperson was unable to confirm what kind of animal it was.
The blaze was brought under control and extinguished. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
