(KRON) — Hundreds of pieces of stolen mail and personal checks were found in the home of a suspect accused of fraudulent credit card use, the Alameda Police Department announced Monday.
Police began an investigation after an Alameda resident reported fraudulent use on their credit card in early January. More than $1,700 was unknowingly charged to the victim’s card over a series of transactions, authorities said.
A potential suspect was identified by the police department. On Wednesday, the suspect was arrested as they walked out of an Alameda post office.
A search of the suspect’s residence uncovered “hundreds of pieces of stolen mail, including ID cards, checks, credit cards, tax documents, and banking information,” Alameda police said. “Many of the items were addressed to Alameda residents.” Officers also located burglary and theft tools along with drug paraphernalia, according to authorities.
Detectives are continuing to process hundreds of pieces of evidence, including nearly 300 personal checks, as of Monday. The U.S. Postal Service Inspector’s Office is working with the police department to return all unopened mail to the rightful owners.
