The Santa Ana Unified School District approved layoffs that will hit nearly 300 employees during a vote on Friday night.
The layoffs, which were long speculated, come as the district implements what it calls a Fiscal Stabilization Plan. As a result, layoffs will affect many teachers, counselors, coaches and social workers.
The Santa Ana School Board approved the layoffs in a 4-1 vote.
In approving the measure, the board stated that the layoffs will help the district address a $187 million budget deficit.
Pink slips will need to be given to affected employees by March 15.
