(KRON) — A man who was struck and killed by a Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit train in San Rafael on Monday afternoon has been identified by the Marin County Sheriff’s Office Coroner Division.
The fatal pedestrian collision occurred at around 3 p.m. on the railway tracks near the intersection of North San Pedro Road and Los Ranchitos Road, according to the sheriff’s office. A preliminary investigation indicated that the train engineer saw the man, later identified as Gregory Conroy Ingrassia, 54, of San Rafael, on the trackway and activated the emergency brakes and warning horn in an attempt to avoid a collision.

Ingrassia was struck and suffered blunt impact injuries after authorities said he did not yield to the moving train. The man was found unconscious and unresponsive immediately following the crash, the sheriff’s office said. Emergency first responders declared Ingrassia deceased at the scene.
“The cause of the collision remains under investigation and no formal conclusions have been formed,” the sheriff’s office said Tuesday morning. Routine toxicology tests will be performed along with a forensic postmortem examination.
The San Rafael Police Department and Marin County Sheriff’s Office are investigating.
