SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — A young black-crowned night heron continues to recover after being rescued from a San Francisco tree tangled in fishing line with a hook in its bill, the SF Animal Care and Control said in an update Monday.
On Saturday morning, city wildlife officials responded to a report from the SF National Maritime Historical Park of a heron stuck in a tree at Fisherman’s Wharf. An animal control officer scaled a San Francisco Fire Department truck ladder to reach the struggling bird. After the juvenile heron was freed from the fishing line, it was brought down the ladder to be transported for medical care.
A crowd of spectators at the wharf cheered on the rescue efforts, wildlife officials said.
On Monday, Animal Care and Control provided an update from the Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA. “He did really well, stabilized here for 3 days,” the agency said. “He actually gained nearly 50 grams of body weight.”
The young heron was transferred Monday to the International Bird Rescue in Fairfield to have the hook surgically removed and continue rehabilitation, officials said.
