(KRON) – The Golden State Warriors announced on Tuesday that the team will be retiring four-time NBA champion and 2015 Finals MVP Andre Iguodala’s No. 9 jersey.
The ceremony will most fittingly be after the Warriors play against former teammate Klay Thompson’s latest team the Dallas Mavericks on Sunday, Feb. 23 at the Chase Center.
Iguodala was selected by the Philadelphia 76ers as the ninth overall draft pick and was traded to the Dubs in 2013 in a three-team deal. Warriors Co-Executive Chairman and CEO Joe Lacob said he knew Iguodala could possibly be cemented as “one of the smartest, shrewdest and most unique and successful players to wear a Warrior uniform.”
“We thought all of that could be true when we acquired him in 2013, but the reality– four titles, six Finals appearances, and a Final MVP –exceeded even our wildest imagination,” said Lacob. “He was the perfect player and person at the perfect time for our team, and the sacrifice he made in coming off the bench in 2014 sent a message that he came here to help us do one thing: win. The proof is in the rafters, and his number belongs alongside the banner he helped us raise.”
Iguodala retired as a Golden State Warrior in October 2023 after two seasons with the Miami Heat.
Appearing in the seven Finals series in his 19 seasons, he received championship rings in 2015, 2017, 2018, and 2022. The season Iguodala won the Finals MVP, the Warrior’s victory ended a 40-year drought for the franchise. In addition to his 2015 MVP title, he was an All-Star in 2012 and was an All-Defensive selection in 2010-11 and 2013-14.
The jersey retirement announcement also occurred on Iguodala’s 41st birthday.
