Orange County boys basketball Top 25: Mater Dei takes over No. 1 spot, Jan. 27

This week’s Orange County high school boys basketball rankings.

BOYS BASKETBALL TOP 25

(Records through Sunday, Jan. 26)

1. Mater Dei 19-5: The Monarchs had a great week, with a Trinity League win over last week’s No. 1 team Santa Margarita, a one-sided win over Servite in league and a 71-60 win over Crean Lutheran in the Nike Extravaganza. The Monarchs, who are 5-1 in league, play JSerra on Wednesday.

2. Santa Margarita 17-5: The Eagles lost twice last week in the Trinity League, 62-59 to Mater Dei and 77-67 to St. John Bosco, their first two league losses to go to 3-2 in league.

3. JSerra 19-5: The Lions beat Servite by 64 points and beat Orange Lutheran by 28 points. They are 5-2 in the Trinity League and play at Mater Dei on Wednesday.

4. Los Alamitos 16-8: The Griffins are 8-0 in the Sunset League. They had a 93-63 win last week over second-place Edison and a 68-62 win over Foothill in the Nike Extravaganza.

5. Crean Lutheran 12-11: The Saints are in first place in the challenging Crestview League with a 4-1 league record that includes last week’s 57-53 win over La Habra, the team that gave them their one league loss.

6. Canyon 19-7: Canyon played three Crestview League games last week, two wins over Foothill and a one-point loss to rising Cypress.

7. Fairmont Prep 15-8: The Huskies are 4-0 in the San Joaquin League and take a six-game winning streak into their league home game Tuesday against rival Pacifica Christian.

8. Pacifica Christian 16-7: The Tritons, 2-1 in the San Joaquin League, will try to avenge their 60-56 loss two weeks ago to Fairmont Prep when they play the Huskies on Tuesday at Fairmont Prep.

9. Cypress 17-9: The Centurions last week beat La Habra 65-63 and Canyon 61-60 in the Crestview League. They are 3-3 in the league after starting 0-3.
