SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — Police in San Francisco have arrested 218 people along the city’s troubled Sixth Street corridor over the past 30 days, the San Francisco Police Department announced. The arrests were part of intensified law enforcement efforts in the area.
The department has shifted resources to focus on the stretch of Sixth immediately south of Market in recent weeks. According to SFPD, foot beats have been added and officers from district stations across the city are lending support.
The enforcement on Sixth, SFPD said, marks the latest phase of the SFPD Drug Market Coordination Center (DMACC). Previous DMACC enforcements have targeted Seventh and Mission Street, and United Nations Plaza.
“Those areas have seen significant improvement in street conditions and reductions in crime,” SFPD said. Enforcements in those areas also remain ongoing.
Of the 218 arrested along Sixth Street, 124 have been arrested for drug-related offenses, 36 for outstanding warrants, 18 for assault, and 40 for other crimes.
“Our officers are working hard to make arrests and improve the unacceptable conditions along Sixth Street,” said SFPD Chief Bill Scott. “The SFPD has more work to do, and we are committed to addressing this challenge for as long as it takes. We have seen progress in other areas of the city, and we will ultimately see conditions improve in this area as well.”
Chief Scott thanked SFPD’s “hard-working officers” and San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie for “making his work a priority for his administration.”
Since taking office earlier this month, Mayor Lurie has pledged to make DMACC a 24/7 operation. He also introduced the Fentanyl State of Emergency Ordinance to the SF Board of Supervisors, looking to free up additions resources to combat the city’s drug crisis.
Since DMACC was launched back in May of 2023, SFPD has made 5,741 arrests and seized over 300 kilos of narcotics — including 132 kilos of fentanyl.
Earlier this month, San Francisco Supervisor Matt Dorsey, whose district encompasses the Sixth Street corridor, asked the city to outline a one-year plan to make at least 100 arrests per night on the blighted section of street.
