SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — A San Francisco supervisor is speaking out against a Republican budget plan that includes possibly rescinding $200 million in federal funding earmarked for the Presidio. Clawing back the funding, according to the San Francisco Chronicle, is one of the items in a 50-page list being circulated among top Republicans looking for ways to fund President Donald Trump’s agenda.
That agenda, the Chronicle reports, includes a tax cut and a massive immigration crackdown. The list also reportedly offers suggestions like raising taxes for people who receive scholarships, own homes or pay student loans.
However, San Francisco District 2 Supervisor Stephen Sherrill isn’t having it.
“The Presidio is more than a park; it is a treasured part of San Francisco’s history, culture, and environment,” said Sherrill, whose district the Presidio falls in. “From a historic landmark to its community programs and protected natural habitats, the Presidio is a local and national treasure.”
The funding for the Presidio, which is intended to address several maintenance issues and improve the park’s climate resiliency, was approved in former President Joe Biden’s 2022 Inflation Reduction Act that was passed by a bipartisan vote in Congress.
“To claw back this investment is not only short-sighted; it is a clear partisan attack on a space that serves as a model for preservation and community-building,” Sherrill said. “As the Supervisor for District 2, which includes the Presidio, I will continue to advocate for its protection and improvement. I urge my colleagues at every level of government to stand against efforts that threaten critical funding for our natural spaces and protected parks.”
