Gen Z is most challenging generation to work with, according to survey

(KRON) — The younger generation has always had a tough time proving itself to older generations in the workplace. Back in the 1990s, older workers spoke disparagingly of “20-something” Gen Xers making their way into the workplace at the time.

In the late-2000s, millennials emerged as everyone’s leading contender for the scourge of the workplace. But few previous generations seem to have carved out as negative a reputation in the workplace as quickly and thoroughly as Gen Z has.

How bad is Gen Z’s workplace rep?

Nearly half — 45% — of hiring managers find Gen Z to be “the most challenging generation to work with,” according to a recent survey from Resume Genius. And this negative perception apparently isn’t just limited to older generations.

The same percentage of Gen Z hiring managers — 45% — said their own generation is the most difficult to manage, according to the survey.

Millennial’s workplace stock rising

With Gen Z fighting its bad rep, hiring managers said the generation they expect to hire most in the upcoming years is millennials — 45%. Yet, despite its reputation, 29% of hiring managers said they expect to hire Gen Z in the coming year — more than double the number who said they expect to hire Gen X — 14%.

In terms of other generations hiring managers found challenging, millennials came in second — 29% — followed by Gen X — 13% — and boomers — 9%.

Why is Gen Z so challenging to work with?

The survey didn’t go into any of the reasons why Gen Zers are supposedly challenging to work with. However, this is a generation that famously came of age during the pandemic and missed out on internships, dorm parties, and many of the other workplace and socialization opportunities college traditionally brings.

According to Forbes, bosses who have fired Gen Z workers say there were unprofessional, unorganized and had poor communication skills.

Why you shouldn’t give up on Gen Z workers

But don’t throw in the towel on Gen Z just yet. According to the author of the survey, Resume Genius Senior Hiring Manager Geoffrey Scott, “Gen Z has already shaken things up, but they’re not here to break things — they bring a unique blend of talent and bold ideas that can rejuvenate any workforce.”

“Gen Zers might have a bad rep, but they have the power to transform workplaces for the better,” Scott added.
