SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — A San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) student reported an encounter with a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent Thursday morning on a Muni bus. According to a letter by Balboa High School Principal Catherine Arenson, a Visitacion Valley Middle School student said an ICE agent asked for identification and where they were from.
The alleged encounter happened on the 29 Muni bus on Thursday morning, the letter to Balboa High School students states. Arenson said the student was not harmed or detained; they are safe and with their family now.
In the letter, Arenson acknowledged the incident is “alarming” for the community. The principal added it wants to be proactive in keeping its students, families and staff safe.

Despite President Donald Trump’s action to crack down on illegal immigration via mass deportations, SFUSD said it will remain a “safe haven for all students regardless of citizenship status.”
“We have been coordinating closely with the City and County of San Francisco and California Department of Education to ensure we have resources and plans in place for supporting vulnerable communities,” the school district wrote in a letter on Jan. 16.
KRON4 reached out to the San Francisco Police Department, the Department of Homeland Security, SF Supervisor Shamann Walton and SFUSD for more information about the incident. We are awaiting a response.
