San Francisco city leaders talk safety and scammers ahead of Lunar New Year

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — The City of San Francisco is preparing for the annual Chinese Lunar New Year festivities that will be held over the coming weeks by talking about safety.

Lunar New Year attracts thousands of people to San Francisco each year. The parade in Chinatown is probably the biggest draw, but there are also concerts and events across the city in January and February.

On Thursday, San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie and San Francisco Police Department Chief Bill Scott outlined the steps they are taking to make sure all these events are safe as possible.

“We will make sure everyone feels safe and secure,” said Mayor Lurie. “Deploying additional officers to key areas. Using crowd management techniques and keeping lines of communication open with event organizers and local leaders.”

“We’ve had some really tragic events across the country in the last couple months,” said Chief Scott, referencing the recent New Orleans truck attack that killed 14 people. “And a lot of people, that weighs heavy on their minds.  When they come to San Francisco and for the people who live in San Francisco, we don’t want you thinking about that. What we want you to think about is living in the moment and having a great time. Knowing that we are there to protect you and keep you safe and that’s exactly what we will do.”

Authorities are also warning the public about what’s known as “The Blessing Scam.” Police said that’s where a scammer promises someone—usually an elderly person—a blessing or good luck if they put valuables or money in a bag. The bag is then switched for an empty bag as the thieves get away with the valuables.

“If you are walking alone and you are approached by somebody that’s offering you some good fortune by way of a prayer, it’s probably going to be a scam,” said Chief Scott.

It is currently the Year of the Dragon, and the Year of the Snake begins on Jan. 29.
